Here's why Hrithik Roshan rejected Shah Rukh Khan's cult classic film 'Swades': Role rewind

Hrithik Roshan’s journey over the past two decades reflects his exceptional talent and versatility. From the determined soldier in ‘Lakshya’ to the charismatic thief in ‘Dhoom 2,’ he has captivated audiences with diverse roles. His performances in ‘Guzaarish’, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, ‘Super 30’ and many more, further establish him as one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, showcasing his ability to excel across genres.

However, along this path, he has also turned down several significant film offers. One of the most notable films he rejected is ‘Swades’, a project that ultimately became a cult classic starring Shah Rukh Khan and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.

Following the success of ‘Lagaan’, Ashutosh Gowariker sought to create another film steeped in patriotism, which led to the conception of ‘Swades’. Before casting Shah Rukh Khan as Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist who returns to India and reconnects with his roots, Gowariker initially approached Hrithik Roshan for the role.

Despite its eventual acclaim, ‘Swades’ faced a rocky start at the box office. Upon its release two decades ago, it was met with a lukewarm reception and was considered a commercial failure. Over time, however, it garnered recognition as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s finest performances and an important piece of Indian cinema.

Reflecting on his choice to decline the role in ‘Swades’, Hrithik Roshan shared insights during an interview with The Times of India. He stated, “I had read Ashutosh’s script for ‘Swades’. I couldn’t see it from the director’s perspective, and therefore didn’t think I was equipped to perform the part. I wasn’t the best person to translate Ashutosh’s vision. And this was right after ‘Lagaan’ so when Ashutosh came to me I felt on top of the world.”

He also mentioned, “’Swades’ is one of my favourite films. And Ashutosh is definitely one of my favourite filmmakers.” This candid admission highlights Roshan’s respect for Gowariker’s vision and his self-awareness regarding his capabilities at that time.
Hrithik and Ashutosh’s professional relationship later flourished when Roshan starred in Gowariker’s historical epic ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ in 2008 and the period drama ‘Mohenjo Daro’ in 2016.

The role that Hrithik declined was ultimately portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan with remarkable depth, contributing to Khan’s legacy as one of Bollywood’s most beloved actors. The film’s journey from a commercial flop to a revered classic serves as a testament to its powerful narrative and emotional resonance with audiences.
Hrithik Roshan has successfully carved out a niche for himself in Bollywood through a variety of memorable roles. Currently, he is busy filming ‘War 2’, directed by Ayan Mukerji. This highly anticipated action thriller promises to deliver an exhilarating cinematic experience. Joining Hrithik in this project is south superstar Jr. NTR, alongside Kiara Advani, making it one of the most eagerly awaited films.
