Bollywood’s legendary showman Raj Kapoor, who passed away on June 2, 1988, remains an iconic figure in Indian cinema. While his films continue to bring joy to audiences, his daughter Reema Jain recently shed light on his final years, revealing that he was “empty and lonely” as he grappled with the loss of his colleagues and declining health.
In an earlier interview according to News18, Reema shared that Raj Kapoor deeply missed his contemporaries, including Nargis, Shankar-Jaikishen, Hasrat Jaipuri, and Shailendra. Often, he would watch his old films and songs, reminiscing about his glorious days in the industry. Reema recalled how he encouraged younger actresses like Dimple Kapadia, Padmini Kolhapure, and Mandakini to study the grace and charm of yesteryear stars, saying, “Look how she lifts her eyes, so delicately. They don’t make like them anymore.”
Raj Kapoor’s health took a toll following the release of ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ (1985). He suffered from severe bronchial-asthma and had difficulty sleeping due to his large frame. Despite his physical struggles, he maintained a youthful spirit, often expressing a desire to “run up the mountain,” though his body couldn’t keep up.
Reema revealed that her father seemed to accept his impending death. In May 1988, he traveled to Delhi to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. However, his condition worsened during the trip due to a dust storm that aggravated his asthma. At the ceremony, Kapoor was restless, relying on an oxygen cylinder. When his name was announced, he was unable to stand. President R. Venkataraman presented the award to him personally, after which Kapoor was rushed to the hospital and placed on a ventilator.
In his final days, Raj Kapoor communicated with his family mostly through his eyes. Reema described his passing as bittersweet: “We were relieved when he passed away because he was suffering a lot.”
This weekend, on the occasion of Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, the Kapoor family, including Neetu Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, and Ranbir Kapoor, honored his legacy with the Raj Kapoor Film Festival.
