Kartik on fame post 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety'

Kartik Aaryan reflects on fame and career transformation post 'Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety' says for the first time ‘people shouted and chanted my name’

Kartik Aaryan made his Bollywood debut with ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama‘ in 2011, a film that garnered a cult following, despite its average box office performance. While his monologues in this film and its sequel made him popular among audiences, he lamented that few knew his real name. This changed dramatically with the release of ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety‘ in 2018, which not only brought him fame but also opened doors to numerous career opportunities.
In an interview with Pinkvilla at the Indian Film Project (IFP), Kartik opened up on his image as the “monologue guy.” He responded, stating, “Mujhe aisa kuch break nahi karna tha, I liked the fact that log mujhe woh lambe lambe dialogues dete hai bolne ke liye, perform karne ke liye, it’s just that mera naam koi jaanta nahi tha tab, that was the only thing.” (I didn’t want to break any image. I liked that people gave me big dialogues to say, but they didn’t know my name.)
The release of ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’ marked a pivotal moment in Kartik’s career. He recalled his experience at the Gaiety cinema shortly after the film’s release: “Mujhe yaad mein Gaiety ko gaya that, Friday ke baad Sunday ko gaya tha and again woh Housefull tha. So, udhaar log pehli baar mujhe Kartik naam se chilla rahe the, mere naam ko pehle baar le rahe the.” (I remember when I went to the Gaiety cinema; people shouted and chanted my name for the first time.)
Kartik elaborated on how the film established a unique vibe among audiences right from its title announcement. Many questioned the title’s oddity and were intrigued by its concept of bromance rather than traditional romance. This fresh approach resonated with viewers and significantly altered his career trajectory.
Despite this newfound fame, Kartik faced a barrage of offers for comedy films following ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety.’ It took subsequent projects like ‘Freddy‘ and ‘Dhamaka‘ for him to showcase his versatility as an actor beyond comedy.
Looking ahead, Kartik Aaryan is set to star in ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3,’ which is scheduled for release on November 1, 2024. The trailer has already created a buzz on social media, generating excitement among fans for this upcoming horror-comedy.
