Kristin Cavallari’s 2020 vacation to the Bahamas was far from paradise.
The Hills alum, 37, recalled experiencing a home break-in during her family’s one-month stay in the Bahamas on the Tuesday, December 17, episode of her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast. “My kids still do not know to this day,” she shared.
After the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, she, her then-husband, Jay Cutler, and their three kids — Camden, 12, Jaxon, 10, and Saylor, 9 — moved from the condo where they were staying to a vacation home. “I had all of my Uncommon James jewelry in the closet, just laid out, you know, like, on one of the counters. And our HVAC unit broke, so we had workers in our house that day and they were fixing everything.”
That night, Cavallari was asleep in bed with Camden when an intruder entered her bedroom. “I woke up to a man crawling on my bedroom floor,” she revealed. “And I was so out of it because, obviously, I had just woken up. Then I go, ‘What the f— are you doing?’ … And this man stands up and runs out the door.”
According to Cavallari, she quickly realized the man was not Cutler, 41, as he was dressed in an all-black outfit and ski mask. “Because Camden was in bed with me, I didn’t yell. I didn’t scream,” she said. “You think in those moments that that’s what you would do, but your instincts just kick in.”
After the man left, Cavallari went to check on Cutler and their younger two kids, who were sleeping in another room. “I woke up Jay, and once I woke Jay up, then I got really nervous. Then I start, like, [getting] really scared,” she recalled. “I started shaking and I was like, ‘Holy f—.’ I was able to process then what just happened. But until that point, I was not scared. I was really calm, and you just are running off of instinct.”
Cavallari said the “HVAC guy” broke in to steal cash and her Uncommon James jewelry, which they ended up getting back. The story of the scary encounter is one the TV personality says she will withhold from her kids.
“I will not tell them probably until they’re adults, you know, because I just think some things kids do not need to know,” she explained on the podcast. “Scary stuff like that, I will take that one. I will hold that one in and take that with me.”
Cavallari did not publicly share her break-in story at the time of her vacation but did post several photos from the tropical trip via social media. “Social distancing,” she captioned a March 2020 Instagram pic of herself chilling on the beach. Sharing an oceanside pic with her kids, she wrote, “The thing that matters most 💙.”
Shortly after returning home from the Bahamas, Cavallari and Cutler announced they were calling it quits after nearly seven years of marriage and more than a decade together. The former spouses finalized their messy divorce two years later.
