Liam Payne, former member of the boy band One Direction, passed away on Wednesday after reportedly falling to his death from his hotel room balcony in Argentina. He was 31.
As fans and the music industry come to terms with his tragic demise, touching videos of Payne’s final interactions with fans outside his hotel in Buenos Aires have gone viral. Garnering millions of views on Twitter within hours of being posted, the footage shows the singer, who appeared to be in good spirits, engaging with fans outside the CasaSur Palermo Hotel.
In a video, Payne is seen smiling and posing for selfies with a female fan, even serenading her with a Spanish song he had learned.
The clip was shared on social media with the caption, “The fact that this was recorded last night and Liam Payne was singing a Spanish song to his fan, it’s so sad. You can see he is smiling with lost eyes! Rest in peace, angel.”
Another viral clip captures an especially emotional exchange between Payne and a male fan. In the video, the fan hugs the singer and tells him, “You saved my life.” Visibly moved, Payne responded with a gentle, “Aww… Thank you,” and suggested they take a photo together while showing off their matching tattoos. The fan also showed Payne a matching scorpion tattoo on his waist, which prompted the singer to reveal, “You knew I drew that right? It’s my drawing.”
Police confirmed Payne’s death in a statement that read, “Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel.”
Following news of his tragic demise, his final Snapchat post and many other photos believed to be from his hotel stay, soon went viral online.
The circumstances surrounding Payne’s death are still under investigation.
Payne is survived by his son, Bear who he shares with Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.
