Various news reports state that Oyama, passed away on September 29, although news of her demise spread on Friday, October 11. Although the cause of her demise is still unclear, unverified sources claim she died of natural causes.
Born Nobuyo Yamashita in 1933, she began her career in the 1960s, but it was her voice acting of the toon character Doraemon in the anime series, that cemented her legacy in the entertainment industry.Starting in 1979, she voiced the character for over 25 years, becoming the unmistakable voice of a generation and a symbol of childhood nostalgia for millions.
Doraemon, a time-travelling robot cat who helps his young friend Nobita navigate life, became an integral part of Japanese pop culture. After becoming a hit in Japan, the show’s popularity spread to other countries including India, where it was dubbed and broadcast.
Upon the announcement of her passing, tributes began pouring in on social media, with fans expressing their deep sorrow and sharing their fondest memories of growing up with Doraemon. Many credited Oyama’s voice as a comforting presence during their childhoods. One fan wrote, “Her voice was the voice of my childhood, and she will be dearly missed.” Another shared, “Ms. Nobuyo Oyama, we will never forget your voice as Doraemon, the beloved character from Japan’s national anime. It may be a while, but please let me hear that voice again someday. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.”
Still another said, “Thank you for a happy childhood.”
“I’m at a loss for words at the moment Nobuyo Oyama who voiced Doraemon from 1979-2005 has passed away at age 90, this physically hurts me as her voice as Doraemon was always my favorite take on the character and hearing this shocks me. Thank you for everything Nobuyo Oyama,” read another emotional tribute.
Another said, “Thank you for everything you gave to this world, Oyama-san. RIP.”
In addition to Doraemon, Oyama lent her voice to several other popular characters, including Monokuma from the ‘Danganronpa‘ video game series. The voice actress officially retired from the role of Doraemon in 2005 due to health concerns but remained a beloved figure in the industry.
