Rakhee Gulzar talks about her comeback in film industry: 'Choosing a film as an actress should come from within, nobody can force me to do a film' - Exclusive

Rakhee Gulzar recently attended IFFI 2024 for the premiere of her film, ‘Amar Boss‘, which has been selected under the Indian Panorama. At the event, she reflected on her choice to act again, her bond with the director, and the evolving world of cinema.
In conversation with ETimes, Rakhee Gulzar spoke about doing a film after a long time. She said, “It’s been quite some time, really. I observed silently how many of my contemporaries, whom I have worked with in the past, left us. But at the same time, a new generation of artists also emerged. One day, Shibu (Shiboprasad Mukherjee) called me saying that he wanted to meet me with a film script, and I clearly said that I am not acting in films anymore. However, he wanted to narrate the story, and since he was saying it so affectionately, I agreed to hear it. The subject of the film and the character were very interestingly written, and I can confidently say that the story of the film will be appreciated by senior citizens and working ladies of our society. They will be able to relate to the story very well.”

The director of the film is also the male protagonist. Talking about sharing screen space with him, Rakhee added, “Well, he is playing my son in the film, and that character is very realistic, but the mother-son relationship has a bitter equation. As a director, Shibu is different. He gets the work done very politely and quietly. I think that is his biggest plus point.”

Talking about her comeback to the film industry, Rakhee said, “I am very much here; my daughter is making a film, I am in touch with all the new actors, youngsters, and my contemporaries. I am very much here. But yes, choosing a film as an actress should come from within. Nobody can force me to do a film. I liked the script; I wanted to do the film, and therefore I did. What matters most to me is the subject of the film and the story. I loved this one.”
