Two years later, its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule, has not just lived up to its predecessor’s legacy, but has shattered box office records, setting a new benchmark for Indian cinema.
On its opening day, Pushpa 2 grossed an astonishing ₹175 crore including premiere shows in India, firmly establishing itself as a cinematic juggernaut. This includes an unprecedented Rs 67 crore from the Hindi belt alone, eclipsing the ₹65.5 crore opening day record previously held by Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan. The overwhelming success of Pushpa 2 comes at a time when Hindi cinema is grappling with an existential crisis. Despite a few blockbusters like Gadar 2, Animal, Stree 2,Pathaan and Jawan, the broader trend in Bollywood has been a lackluster performance at the box office.

Talking about the implications of Pushpa 2 on Bollywood Cinema, exhibitor Akkshay Rathie says, “On the basis of just the numbers, there are no implications except for the fact that now we have a new benchmark to go after. Also, all of us once in a while, need a reality check that the potential of India’s market is this and it throws a challenge at us to go after it, replicate it or better it.”

“But there is also a qualitative impact, which basically tells us that we are really disconnected from and far away from the pulse of the audience, because here is a film which is made in Hyderabad, which is very culturally embossed in regional ethos and has gone on to achieve such ballistic numbers. Also what one witnessed in Patna during the trailer launch , the number of people who turned, I don’t know how many of our young stars will have the ability to do that in the state of Bihar. So, I really think that it’s a wake up call for all people to get off our ivory tower, and believe in that one mantra that makes a successful industry which is ‘Audience Devo Bhava’ , he added.

While Akkshay feels that one Hindi film that can match up to the Pushpa 2 numbers that would with Aditya Chopra and Ayan Mukerji’s War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr as it has the best of both Hindi and South market.
Looking at the Pushpa 2 numbers Trade Expert Taran Adarsh says, “These are pan-India films, and they have received huge response from Telugu states which has added to their charm. Also, what is happening is that the bar is being raised with every pan-India film, and that’s where as Bollywood, we need to tap into those markets. Pan-India stars have the advantage that they come from strong local industry and have a huge fan following there, and their fans are going to flock to the theaters. And it’s a given that numbers would be high because of the consumption pattern by the fans on day 1.”

“The question for Bollywood is how to penetrate into those regional markets; Shah Rukh Khan did that in Jawan, and Ranbir Kapoor did that with Animal and Brahmastra: Part One-Shiva, but they had a south connection in Atlee, Sandeep Reddy Vanga and SS Rajamouli also also went all out to promote the film. But I feel in the time to come, everything will be streamlined. Even if one talks about the Hindi version, Pushpa has done 70 crore, and in the next few years, we could be looking at 80 or 90 crore. Time and economics are changing,” he added.
