From travel goals to fashion cues to examples of male bonding to beautiful music, there are several grounds on which Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara‘ earned appreciation. However, did you know initially people didn’t trust the movie and had doubts regarding its success?
Abhay Deol, who played one of the leading roles in the film, in a past interview spoke about the many doubts that people had over the success of ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, which lacked a traditional villain but brought to the forefront inner turmoil in its characters, causing a ruckus in Bollywood corridors.
While speaking with BBC News Hindi, Abhay recollected “Many people in the film industry were asking, ‘Who is the villain? There is no villain. What is inner conflict? Who will come to watch Hrithik Roshan’s inner conflict?'”. Despite these hovering concerns, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ was a hugely successful movie and remains an important film of Deol’s career.
Abhay believes that the freshness in combination with the novel packaging of the film is what worked for it. “That is how fresh it was. The combination of these actors, the kind of film we made, and the budget we worked with—it all clicked. However, the industry did not have much faith that it would work,” he said, underlining challenges to break out of those traditional forms of storytelling.
‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’
Released in 2011, the movie chronicles the tale of three friends on a bachelor’s trip to Spain, where they reconnect, heal, unwind, fall in love, and get a new and better perspective on life. The movie had some of the most versatile actors as the leading stars – Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin.
